چکیده

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using micromachined structures promises improved temperature uniformity and cycling time together with decreased reagent and sample volumes. Thermal design of these structures will benefit from measurements of the temperature distribution in the reacting liquid. We report measurements of temperature uniformity and time constant in a microfabricated 18-vessel array using encapsulated liquid crystals suspended in the liquid. Separate sets of crystals are used to image temporal and spatial temperature variations near the processing thresholds of 55 C and 95 C with a resolution of 0.1 C. While the thermometry technique developed here is particularly useful for characterizing microfabricated PCR systems, it can also aid with the thermal design of a broad variety of microfluidic devices. Improvement the reflection coefficient of Waveguide-Fed Phased-Array Antenna utilizing Liquid Crystal

Abstract— This work investigates the improvement of the active reflection coefficient of waveguide-fed phased-array antenna using liquid crystal layers. The anisotropy properties of liquid crystal layer can be employed to eliminate blind scan angle and improve the wide angle impedance matching of the waveguide-fed phased array antennas. The authors have expressed the modal analysis of the waveg...

A diaphragm-based pressure sensor packaged using liquid crystal polymer and silicone oil for underwater applications

Reliable hermetic packaging of microelectromechanical system (MEMS) pressure sensor arrays for underwater applications always presents a formidable challenge, which is further compounded by the unforgiving harsh sea environments, during the design, fabrication and characterization stages of the sensor arrays. As such, a flexible underwater diaphragm-based pressure sensor array packaging scheme ...

Measurement of the Thermal Conductivity Anisotropy in Polyimide Films

Polymer films are playing an important role in the development of micromachined sensors and actuators, fast logic circuits, and organic optoelectronic devices. The thermal properties of polyimide films govern the temporal response of many micromachined thermomechanical actuators, such as ciliary arrays. This work develops three experimental techniques for measuring both the in-plane and the out...
